The Lpm Effect for Eev Hadronic Showers in Ice: Implications for Radio Detection of Neutrinos
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the longitudinal development of hadronic showers in ice for energies up to 100 EeV and its implications for radio and optical Cherenkov emission. A small fraction of showers induced by primaries of energy above 1 EeV is shown to display the characteristic elongation associated to the Landau Pomeranchuck Migdal (LPM) effect. The rest look like ordinary showers because the highest energy π 0 's interact instead of decaying in two photons. The LPM effect observed in this fraction of the showers is mainly due to η and η ′ production and decay. We give parameterizations for the total and excess charge tracklengths and for the amplitude and angular spread of the electric field spectrum in the Cherenkov direction. Implications for neutrino detection are briefly addressed.

Cherenkov Radio Pulses from Eev Neutrino Interactions: the Lpm Effect
We study the implications of the LPM effect for the Cherenkov radiation of EeV electromagnetic showers in the coherent radiowave regime for ice. We show that for showers above 100 PeV the electric field scales with shower energy but has a markedly narrower angular distribution than for lower energy showers. We give an electric field frequency and angular spectrum parameter-ization valid for sho...

We present results of the simulation of the intensity distribution of radio pulses from the Moon due to interaction of EeV neutrinos with lunar regolith. The radiation mechanism is of coherent Ĉerenkov radiation of the negative charge excess in the shower, known as Askar’yan effect. Several realistic observational setups with ground radio telescopes are considered. Effective detector volume is ...

متن کامل30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE An upper limit on the electron-neutrino flux from the HiRes instrument
Air-fluorescence detectors such as the High Resolution Fly’s Eye (HiRes) instrument are very sensitive to upward-going, Earth-skimming ultrahigh energy electron-neutrino-induced showers. This is due to the relatively large interaction cross sections of these high-energy neutrinos and to the LandauPomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. The LPM effect is responsible for a significant decrease in the cr...
متن کاملSummary: Acoustic Detection of EHE Neutrinos
Neutrino astronomy was initiated primarily to search for TeV to PeV neutrinos from Active Galactic Nuclei, and the optical Cherenkov technique is well suited for this energy range. Interest has grown recently in detecting EeV neutrinos, particularly the “cosmogenic” neutrinos produced during propagation of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) through the microwave background radiation. These n...
